SMA graduation requirements are already designed to expose students to a wide range of content. Through the Learning Academies, students will use their own talents, technology, and our entire community to explore multiple academic areas of interests. The academic exposure students receive in each category will enable the student to choose a track catered to the student’s interest and abilities. However, students are not locked into one specific Learning Academy should their interest change. This course of study encourages students to investigate multiple areas of study. One of the 6 Learning Academies is Aviation.
St. Michael the Archangel is the ONLY Catholic high school nationwide that offers and Aviation program! SMA partners with the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) & High School Aviation STEM Curriculum to set the course of study. Our students are taught by a highly qualified staff member, Dr. Jim Brady.
Dr. Brady earned his PhD in Engineering from the Ohio State University, BS in Aerospace Engineering from Wichita State University, an MS in Engineering from the University of Kansas, and MBA in marketing from Avila University. He served in the Air Force as a flight test engineer before joining Lucent Technologies Bell Labs where he was the Engineering Manager for Military and Satellite Systems. After retirement from Bell Labs he spent thirteen years as the avionics certification specialist for the Federal Aviation Administration. He is a certified flight instructor in both airplanes and gliders, enjoys hot air balloons, and is a commercial drone pilot.
Our school is located within a couple of miles of the Lee’s Summit Municipal Airport, providing easy access for aviation field trips! Students graduate with their pilot license after completing our program.
SMA offers six Learning Academies for our students:
- Business Technology
- Engineering/Industrial Technology
- Human Service
- Performing Arts/Communications
