SMA graduation requirements are already designed to expose students to a wide range of content. Through the Learning Academies, students will use their own talents, technology, and our entire community to explore multiple academic areas of interests. The academic exposure students receive in each category will enable the student to choose a track catered to the student’s interest and abilities. However, students are not locked into one specific Learning Academy should their interest change. This course of study encourages students to investigate multiple areas of study. One of the 6 Learning Academies is Engineering/Industrial Technology.
Engineering and Industrial Technology is a growing field and we are excited to introduce our students to this field of study. At SMA, our Engineering/Industrial Academy is powered by Project Lead the Way (PLTW), which develops STEM curriculum in line with the industry standards set by the top companies in each field. Courses available in this academy include, AP computer science principles, intro to engineering, intro to business, web design and entrepreneurship. Our students also have the opportunity to take classes from Summit Technology Academy or Herndon Career Center to dive deeper into their specific interests. Our Robotics team also provides challenges to students and develops the collaborative skills needed to succeed in the career.
SMA offers six total Learning Academies for our students:
- Business Technology
- Engineering/Industrial Technology
- Human Service
- Performing Arts/Communications
For more detailed information of our learning academies, visit our Student Handbook for the Learning Academy Chart on pages 23 & 24. The chart will list core classes and electives related to a specific field of study.
