Dear SMA Families,
We look forward to seeing everyone back at school in August and know that sometimes the back to school rush in late July can be overwhelming and time-consuming. As a reminder starting this year we will be asking all students to be in an SMA uniform starting in August of 2018.
I realize this is a dramatic change from my original statement that all students from O’Hara could wear their O’Hara uniform until they graduated, but unfortunately, that policy allowed for too many loopholes. As a mom who also pays bills, I really thought this would be a nice economic solution and a nice fit for our school. Our experience as a faculty with this decision was very negative. Students continued to push the line as to what they could and could not wear every day. Some of the problems included students who had attended O’Hara taking advantage of a new broader policy, constantly challenging our faculty, while transfer students from other Catholic high schools saw it as an opportunity to wear their old uniform as well. The dress code became a constant battle for our faculty, which is the direct opposite of why schools have uniforms.
Thank you again for your continued support. As a new principal trying to gain trust and build positive relationships, this was a difficult call. In the end, I feel our administrative team has made a decision that upholds our mission and is best for our community. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us, we welcome your feedback. Blessings for a safe and restful summer.
With a grateful heart,
Jodie Maddox, Principal
